Artist's Description
This was such a memorable morning at Guilin. We left our hotel around 3 AM to get to the location for sunrise shooting. We had to get into a boat and sail in total darkness to get to a ledge. We set up our tripods on the ledge waiting for sunrise. Our model fishermen were hired to provide the human elements in the landscape. Chinese landscape art always include human elements as opposed to Western aesthetics. The fishermen in their rustic boats,with lanterns and their Cormorant buddies complete the picture for a classic composition.
Guilin is a city in southern China known for its dramatic landscape of limestone karst hills. At its center are 2 lakes, Shanhu (Cedar) and Ronghu (Banyan), remaining from a medieval-era moat that once surrounded the city. Boats travel through these and other lakes via connected rivers. On Shanhu Lake’s shore, twin pagodas, the Sun and Moon, light up the sky at night.
